Yesterday we went to Mount Rainier National Park…everything about the day was perfect, including the temperature which, at 5400 feet, stayed around 70 degrees.
Driving into the park is similar to driving up the road going into Glacier….very deep canyons on the roadsides and across… very dramatic mountain scenes…
It was refreshing to get away from the hot desert environment. At Grand Coulee it was into the mid 90’s every afternoon.
We first saw the mountain when we were coming into Yakima on the way here. Yakima is over 50 miles away and even from that distance the mountain was huge. Here we are at least 10,000 feet below the summit
We drove to the most popular site in the park which is called Paradise…..it was crowded but not like the Glacier crowds. A beautiful old hotel which opened July 1st, 1917 is there and a modern Visitor’s Center here…….
We took a short hike while there…..
After Paradise we drove to another place called Longmire which I believe was the first place people came to back before there were good roads….this old vehicle was under a roof there
This is one of 5 made by Kenworth to bus tourists from Seattle and Tacoma to Mount Rainier. It operated for 25 years between 1937 and 1962.
