On the road West

We left the soaring club on Sunday. We had decided on US 50 as the route for our trip to Utah so we drove to Lawrenceburg, IN (where we used to live) to hook up with US 50. Driving across Indiana was very pleasant.  After leaving Aurora, Indiana the road becomes two lanes but traffic was light and those who were out there were not in a hurray. In Illinois the road became much straighter but the road  condition was not as good.

We got to our destination on Lake Carlyle in Illinois in late afternoon and got a camp site at Dam West which is near the Marina. This is another Corp of Engineers project. These places are really special. With the National Park Senior Pass the price is  $13 a day for a full hook up camp site. Lake Carlyle is huge, about 26,000 acres. Construction on the dam began in 1958 and was completed 9 years later. It created the largest man made lake in Illinois, about 16 miles long by 3 1/2 miles wide.
